Description

Downhill bike tours offer vacationers a unique opportunity to coast through tropical rainforest. Your guide will pick you up at your Waikiki hotel (or at an arranged meeting place if you aren't staying in Waikiki) and then shuttle you to the top of a road high above downtown Honolulu. After being fitted with your bicycle and helmet and receiving a safety briefing, you'll start your cruise down the mountain. Along the way you'll stop at overlooks that feature panoramic views of the skyline and beaches of Honolulu and Waikiki, with iconic Diamond Head Crater as a backdrop. A support van follows bikers down the mountain as you descend from high on the slopes of Mount Tantalus through the Pu'u Ohia rainforest. This 5 mile ride is available as a stand-alone activity, or combine it with a waterfall hike or a snorkel / sail (or both) for an adventure-filled day.

Kevin's Activity Tips:

There are longer downhill bike rides on other islands in Hawaii, but none is more scenic than the cruise down Mount Tantalus. With unparalleled views of downtown Honolulu, this ride is a "must do" in our opinion. The most popular tour option is to combine it with the rainforest waterfall hike to a private 200′ cascade. The trek through the thick bamboo forest is peaceful and serene … and seems completely detached from the bustle of the city that is just a few miles away.

The biking on this tour is not strenuous … it is a downhill coast. For those looking to get some actual exercise … consider the all dirt track tour offered at Kualoa Ranch. Please note though that all the combo options … biking and waterfall hike … biking and snorkel / sail … and biking with both the waterfall hike and snorkel / sail … all these combos include the downhill bike.

These biking tours are not difficult … but they do require average bike riding ability. Occasionally someone will fall and get hurt while riding on a bike tour, and often it is someone who hasn't been riding a bike for a LONG time. But even experienced riders can get hurt in a moment of inattention; all riders must wear helmets and liability waivers are required for everyone.

The downhill bike tour by itself is a good, laid-back activity for a day when you don't feel like getting up early. This event is run in the middle of the day … which seems odd because so many tours in Hawaii are early-morning events. The reason for this is that the light is better for the view from the Tantalus overlook. In the morning the view of downtown Honolulu is backlit and not as pretty ... in the middle of the day with our typical sunny weather the color of the ocean just POPS against the contrast of the white and gray and black skyscrapers. The view is fantastic too, stretching from Diamond Head to the east all the way to the Honolulu Airport and Pearl Harbor (and beyond!) to the west.

If you want to do this bike tour on a "less-lazy" day, you can combine it here with one of their waterfall hikes, snorkel trips, or BOTH!
