Hollywood has long had a love affair with the beautiful island of Kauai. The film version of South Pacific was even responsible for giving the north shore's pinnacle the name Bali Hai. Elvis and his hit movie Blue Hawaii led to the popular tradition of the Hawaiian Wedding Song and put the Coco Palms Resort (and the entire island) on the map! Some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters have filmed here ... everything from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park, Six Days and Seven Nights, The Descendants, Just Go With It, the new TV show The River ... the list goes on and on and on ... and on!
Hawaii Movie Tour on Kauai is your unique opportunity to visit some of these famous locations on an expertly guided tour. Your air conditioned minibus will take you to a variety of movie locations, while viewing clips of many notable scenes from movies that were filmed at the spot you are visiting. An exclusive stop on this activity is the walking tour of the now shuttered Coco Palms Resort which is otherwise closed to the public and entry is only available to participants of this tour.
You'll see the beautiful and famous Wailua Falls, used in the opening credits of Fantasy Island. You'll drive past the spot where Nicholas Cage made his phonecall in Honeymoon in Vegas (Is it Kapa-a ... or Kapa-a-a???) A stop is made at Moloaa Bay, where the pilot episode of Gilligan's Island was filmed. Visit the Hanalei Pier which was featured in South Pacific and a host of other films.
Lunch is served during this tour at the iconic Tahiti Nui restaurant in Hanalei ... a scene was filmed here for the recent hit movie The Descendants.
Hotel or cruise ship dock pickup is included in the price of this tour for most resort areas in Poipu, Lihue, and Kapaa. There is an extra charge of $11 per person for pickup in the Princeville / north shore area. Children under the age of 4 are free in a lap; if you would like a seat for a child under the age of 4, purchase a seat for them using the child rate.

Pride of America passengers can enjoy the Kauai Movie Tour on their first day in port on Thursday. Pickup at the harbor is scheduled for 8am to coincide perfectly with your ship's scheduled arrival, although your ship typically arrives 30 minute early or more.
For most other cruise ship passengers, this tour works for you as long as you arrive before 8am and depart no earlier than 4pm.
Driving around the island of Kauai you see MANY beautiful sights that look vaguely familiar ... taking this tour will help you remember where you've seen them. It's fun to see movie scenes play out on a screen while looking out the window and seeing the very same spot in it's local context. This tour is also informative ... you'll learn a lot about the history of the island and the role that films played in launching the Hawaii tourist and wedding industries.
The tour of Coco Palms Resort gives a glimpse of just how fast the jungle can reclaim unmaintained buildings in a tropical climate. I found it fascinating and almost spooky to walk through the deserted lobby ... seeing the collapsing buildings ... and realizing that just 20 years ago this place was at the top of the destination list for A-list movie stars. It truly is fitting to have pirates and ghosts filming there recently, as this was a shooting location for Pirates of the Caribbean ... On Stranger Tides back in the summer of 2010. Every once in a while though, the movie tour has a guest who was married here at the Coco Palms Resort back in its glory days, and it can be a truly emotional experience for them to see the current state of disrepair. Plans to restore / rebuild / raze the structures have been in the works and a subject of public discourse in Kauai county for years, but exactly what will happen to this property is still up in the air. One thing is for sure ... this historic property won't be here forever and now is a good chance to view it.
One important consideration ... if you are arriving on a cruise ship and hope to do this tour, you should arrange it WELL IN ADVANCE of your arrival. If you wait until the day before your ship arrives on Kauai, you will not likely be able to secure a place on the Hawaii Movie Tour. It's capacity is far exceeded by the demand when the ship arrives in port. Call us today, or make your reservation using the form on the right!
