Join Bike Volcano on an incredible bicycle adventure exploring Kilauea Volcano, one of the most Active Volcanoes in the world, from summit to sea.

Your exciting day begins at the Visitors Center in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you will receive a tour orientation. The biking starting point is at the Kilauea Overlook, where you will get your first glance of the immense Summit Caldera. Your guide will give you an informative overview of the eruption history at the summit. You will then be fitted for a 2008 Giant Sedona DX comfort mountain bike and safety equipment, and receive a safety briefing.

Your Professional Interpretive Guide will take you through fantastic terrains, all on mostly downhill and leveled paved roads/trails, while sharing geological and mythological information with you. From lush ancient Hawaiian rainforests to dynamic lava landscapes, you will experience a variety of microclimates, huge craters, steaming vents, and impressive lava flows (both young and old). Bike as much or as little of this majestic tour; the support van will always be close by.

The adventure continues as you wind your way through the rainforest and down the Chain of Craters Road. You will see several large pit craters, a lava shield volcano, and lava trees during this part of the tour. The bike route ends at Mau Loa O Mauna Ulu where you’ll experience the massive Mauna Ulu lava flow. There are many stops along bike course to view and photograph this incredible volcanic scenery, and learn about the history of this ever-changing dynamic landscape.

Your air condition van will take you the rest of the way to the ocean to the end of the Chain of Craters Road where the 2003 lava flow has crossed the road. Along the way you will see awesome panoramic views of the Ka’u coastline.
Lunch will be served along the ocean where there is a good possibility of spotting the amazing Humpback Whales that visit the Hawaiian islands during the months of October through May. If Madame Pele (Volcano Goddess) allows, you will also see active lava flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

You will then return to the Kilauea summit by van and pay a visit to the famous Thurston Lava Tube. At this stop you may take a short optional walk through the giant fern forest and explore this fascinating lava tube.

Your last stop will be a relaxing wine tasting at the Volcano Winery. Tropical fruits like yellow guava and the exotic jaboticaba berry are blended with traditional wine grapes and transformed into vibrant creations that capture the playful spirit of Hawaiian paradise and the winery’s relaxed, laid-back atmosphere is the perfect place to try them.

Activity Tips

We are very excited to now offer this unique way to experience Kilauea Volcano to our clients! The sights you see in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are large-scale and breathtaking. Touring the Park by bicycle is absolutely the most unique and exciting ride anywhere on the Big Island of Hawaii. You will feel the heat: you will see, hear, smell , and almost TASTE this active volcano on this tour; all of these senses are heightened as you ride around this volcano on a bicycle.

The physical demands on this tour are rather moderate. You don't have to be in shape for a marathon as most of the riding is level or downhill. If you get tired, the support van is always there for you to take a break so don't let your physical conditioning level determine your participation. You do need to be in over-all good health and you DO NEED TO KNOW HOW TO RIDE A BIKE. If you haven't been on a bike in 20 years, you really should practice before contemplating this ride! Borrow a friend's bike and ride around in your neighborhood. It will boost your confidence and help you enjoy this tour a lot more. While this tour is completely suitable for an average bike rider, your ability to safely do this ride is based upon you and your ability to competently steer, brake, and peddle a bicycle. If you can do that, you'll enjoy this tour. If you can't do that, WE DON'T WANT YOU TO TRY.

This tour includes comfortable and new mountain bikes that feature disc brakes, fenders, and have a comfortable upright seating position. Helmets, gloves, and a rainjacket are provided. Riders should be prepared for a VARIETY OF WEATHER CONDITIONS on this tour. It is common to experience chilly misty weather at the 4000 foot summit of Kilauea, and hot and dry conditions at sea level ... all on the same day. Participants must wear closed toed shoes and eye protection (sunglasses) and should dress in layers. Summit temperatures can be in the low 60's and temperatures on the ocean flats can be in the mid 80's.

I acknowledge that I have read the booking procedures below and wish to submit this reservation for processing.

Upon submitting your activity reservation for processing, one copy is sent to your e-mail address so that you have a record of your order. We will make reservations for you and send an e-mail confirming all of the details. These confirmations are often sent a few minutes after your reservation, but some activities take longer to confirm than others. You will receive an e-mail confirmation by the end of the next business day at the latest. There are no tickets that you need to pick up prior to your event. Your e-mail confirmation will have all the details you need to check in and enjoy your selected activity. This saves you precious time when you arrive in Hawaii.

A credit card is required to guarantee payment for your reservations, but in most cases WE DO NOT charge your credit card when your order is placed. Your credit card is typically charged five days before you leave for Hawaii, and a voucher is faxed to the vendor. Some activities are charged at the time of check-in and your e-mail confirmation will inform you if this is the case. If you cancel your activity after your credit card has been charged you will receive a refund less 10% to cover our credit card processing costs.

We do have one vendor that requires payment at the time that your reservation is made. These activities are clearly marked on our website with the words, "Payment required at the time of reservation."

After making reservations, you may reschedule or cancel your activity up until 48 hours prior to its start (a few activities have 72 hour cancellation policies ... see your confirmation e-mail for details). Within 48 hours of the start of your activity all reservations are final and non-refundable (unless the event is cancelled by the vendor due to weather or other factors). Due to our incredible climate here, weather cancellations are rare.  No-shows and cancellations without adequate notice are charged in full on the credit card used to secure the reservation and are non-refundable.

Most rates quoted on this website do not include the Hawaiian state sales tax which adds 4.1667%,

or the state harbor fee of 3% on boat excursions. Adventureinhawaii.com is a FREE reservations service;

 we have no hidden service charges or fees that we charge for servicing your reservation
