Experience a special evening in paradise at the Haleo Luau!  It is located on gorgeous oceanfront land overlooking ancient historical sites at the Sheraton Kona Resort.  The traditions and cultural practices of old Hawaii come to life with the torch lighting ceremony to the Hawaiian imu ceremony, the uncovering of the kalua pua’a (roast pig) from the earthen oven.  Haleo Luau also features island arts & crafts, a luau buffet dinner and an entertaining show that tells the story of historical events through music and dance.

The Story of Haleo – the Voice of Life, celebrates the history of the ahupua’a called Keauhou, and the heart of those who came from this land area.  The dancers and musicians take you on a colorful journey through an important time in Hawaiian history, from the birth of Kamehameha III to the surfing stories of He’eia Bay.  You will have a chance  to meet the dancers before the show, to “talk story” and learn more about the language and culture of Hawai’i.  While you enjoy a delicious feast, live dinner music will serenade you.  As the sun begins to is set over Keauhou Bay… Haleo begins.

Haleo Luau buffet features delicious island cuisine!  The salad and appetizer menu includes  fresh fruit display, taro rolls and mango butter, Waimea field greens (choice of papaya seed or sesame, ginger and orange vinaigrette), Hawaiian purple potato salad, poi and lomi lomi salmon, island-style fern shoot salad, Keauhou macaroni salad, Hawaiian ahi poke with onions and red ogo.  The entrées include lemongrass-scented rice, island style kalua pork, lemon verbena salted island fish, pineapple-soy glazed beef.  Don’t forget about dessert which has papaya brulee, pineapple upside-down cake, kona coffee chocolate cake, and haupia. The vegetarian menu includes lemongrass-scented rice, sweet molokai potato, poi, and grilled seasonal vegetables.  There are many gluten free options on the menus as well.  The open bar serves standard cocktails and other drinks, and Kona coffee and hot teas are also offered.

Which luau to attend on the Big Island? Well, things are getting pretty interesting in the luau scene on the Big Island.

For those who are staying in Kailua-Kona town or one of the condo properties along Ali’i Drive and you don’t relish the idea of an hour drive to and from your luau, you might want to attend the Island Breeze Luau which is held at the Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha’s Beach Hotel near the pier at the Kailua-Kona Harbor. This luau offers a feeling of authenticity due to its incredibly historic location. The beach side arrival by canoe of the luau’s Royal Court is very unique and makes for great photos. This luau has been voted the “Best Luau on the Big Island” by the readers of West Hawaii Today for seven years in a row. We really appreciate the reserved seating upgrade; for those of you who are reading this a few weeks or more before your arrival you should grab some of these reserved up front seats while you have the chance!

For guests who are staying in Waikoloa, Mauna Lani, or Hapuna, we recommend the Hawaii Loa Luau.   A good Wednesday night choice with the luau at the Waikoloa Marriott.  If you are staying north of the airport, you don’t want to drive all the way into town when the best luau choices are close by. If you aren’t up for the drive, get reserved seating at the Island Breeze Luau.
